District level or Permits Office Ministry of Agriculture Headquarters, Gaborone (Department of Veterinary Services) NB: The application form contains all information that is required to process the VIP (Veterinary Import Permit). Only an original permit may accompany the consignment. Faxes or photocopies are not acceptable. You will be required to state the means by which they can receive the VIP, either by post, Courier Company at your cost or self-collect. 3. The VIP will be issued within 24 hours of receipt of the application should all the requirements be met

| Requirement to obtain Import Permit for Fresh Animal Products (Veterinary Import Permit - VIP) | Permit Requirement | All fresh animal products that are imported into Botswana must be accompanied by an Import Permit duly issued by the Department of Veterinary Services (DVS). | Requirement to obtain Import Permit for Animal Feed -Stock (Veterinary Import Permit - VIP) | Permit Requirement | All animal feed-stock being imported into Botswana has to be accompanied by the relevant import permit issued by the Departimet of Veterinary Services (DVS). This requirement is to control the movement of various animal feeds that may contain restricted or prohibited additives and could compromise the onward sale of Botswana animal products to specific international markets | Applicant are required to submit additional information with this applicationstating the type of feeds, specifications or formulations for all the feeds intended to be produced, the source of raw materials and other guarantees that the Director may require. Such guarantees include compliance to prohibition of use of specified hormones, growth promoters, thyrostatic compounds, beta agonists and meat and bone meal of animal origin. Import permits issued by DVS for animal feeds are decentralised and can be issued at any veterinary district office where a state veterinary officer is available. | Requirement to obtain Import Permit for Veterinary Drugs (Veterinary Import Permit - VIP) | Permit Requirement | All Veterinary drugs being imported into Botswana, have to be accompanied by the relevant import permit issued by the Department of Veterinary Services (DVS). This requirement is to control the movement of various clinical drugs utilised in the treatment of animals and animal disorders in accordance with the restrictions/prohibitions as to type and use of the drug as laid down in the relevant Act | Should the permit application be for vaccines and prescriptive drugs, the applicant must either be or have in their employ, a suitably qualified full time veterinarian or pharmacist or someone of similar stature. In dealing with over the counter drugs the minimum qualification required is a Certificate in Animal Health and Production. | Requirement to obtain Import Permit for Veterinary Samples (Veterinary Import Permit - VIP) | Permit Requirement | All Veterinary samples being imported into Botswana, have to be accompanied by the relevant import permit issued by the Departimet of Veterinary Services (DVS). This requirement is to control the movement of various clinical samples in accordance with the requirements and the restrictions/ prohibitions laid don in the relevant Act. This to insure that samples that could be highly detrimental to the well-being and health of both human and animals if not handled, contained or transported in a presrcibed manner and/or are inadvertantly or deliberately released in uncontrolled circumstances are suitably managed in accordance with the relevant Act | A pre-requisite to the issuance of a veterinary import permit is a health certificate from the exporting country.
